Public First Aid Course in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Elsewhere

Learning first aid at the St John Ambulance Brigade is a very rewarding and worthwhile experience. It is also the first step for those who wish to volunteer with our organisation. The course is Dublin, Cork, Limerick and around the country.

The course is intended for those who wish to learn first aid, but cannot take time off work or give up weekends to do so. We have distilled decades of experience in first aid into an excellent course. The St. John Ambulance Brigade of Ireland issue a certificate to successful participants. 

Where does the course take place?

The course takes place on 29 Upper Leeson Street in Dublin. However, our courses are also available in Cork and Limerick. We also provide in-house or on-site training as requested. 

How long does the course last?

7 nights. The course generally takes place on Tuesday evenings between 8 and 10.

Our next course takes place from the 28th of September for eight consecutive Tuesday evenings

How is the first aid course tested?

The course is tested with an examination and practical assessment. The Brigade Certificate is valid for two years, with an ongoing option to extend if done so during the life of certification.

What is the practical side of the course like?

Knowing the theory behind first aid is important. However, practicising the skills involved is equally crucial.  Our instructors will show you how to do a whole range of things, from bandaging to using an AED. You will then get to practise each new skill for yourself with our instructors on hand to help.

• Bandaging
• Knots and Slings
• Treating upper body and lower body fractures
• Adult, Child and Baby CPR (including ABC Checks, Airway maintenance, Artificial Ventilations, Chest Compressions)
• Treating wounds and bleeding
• Treating neck and spine injuries
• Removing clothing
• Foreign Bodies
• Treating soft issue injuries and dislocations
• Treating facial injuries
• Using an AED (defibrillator)

Why bother?

Every year there are over 13,000 deaths in Ireland due to circulatory problems most of which are from coronary heart disease. Approximately 50% progress to cardiac arrest within 2 hours. For many victims it is what happens in the first few minutes following a heart attack that will decide their fate. Every two minutes someone, somewhere, has a heart attack.
